I have been facing the PSU fan not stopping after shutdown after a recent change in my build - changed case fans, added a HDD and started using the ARGB header on my motherboard. Ever since, the PSU fan has never stopped.
The motherboard is "Gigabyte Z390 I AORUS PRO WIFI Mini ITX LGA1151 Motherboard" and the system build is based on this list
The PSU that is listed there is not the correct one, pcpartpicker does not have the one I have which is "SilverStone Technology SST-SX650-G 650W SFX Fully Modular 80 Plus Gold PSU with Improved 92mm Fan and Japanese Capacitors SX650-G"
The changes performed at the time of the appearance of this issue are:
- changed the fans that came with the case with the Silverstone SST-AP124-ARGB 25.5 CFM 120 mm Fan
- added the 2TB hard drive "Seagate BarraCuda 3 TB 2.5" 5400RPM Internal Hard Drive"
- changed the Sata cables that came with the case ones to the "Silverstone Tek Ultra Thin Lateral 90 Degree SATA Cables with Custom Low-Profile Connectors (CP11)" in order to get more space
As soon as I plugged the power cord in the outlet the PSU fan has started to spin
I have read a lot about this issue and while people are saying that the PSU might be at fault, I have managed to make it stop in a consistent manner but not permanent - which leads me to the conclusion that is not the PSU but more the motherboard creating issues - and I would like to know if it is a hardware issue or a firmware issue.
What I have done is that I went into BIOS (version F8c) and enabled the ERP option. After that, the boot was normal and when shut down, all the fans have stopped.
When restarting the PC, the fans turn and the ARGB kicks in as signaled by the case fans lighting up and then the entire PC shuts down. At the second press of the PC power button the PC starts and stops again. At the third one, the PC boots normally and then the AORUS Firmware Update Utility/Tool is automatically started (in Windows) asking me to update the firmware. As I have seen afterwards, the BIOS is restored to the version F5 (the one which the mobo has been shipped with).
I upgraded the firmware using the AAORUS Firmware Update Utility/Tool and then I have tried to disable the Fast Boot from Windows; when shutting down the computer, all the fans (including PSU) stopped and when restated the PC I went through the same process - 2 failed starts, followed by a successful one which kicked in again the firmware upgrade tool even if BIOS was still F5.
My BIOS options for the mobo LEDs are to have them OFF when the system is switched off. I have not turned them off from RGB fusion at any point in time during these tests because I was always forgettting and I am thinking that they are not that important.
I have tried also starting the PC with no USB devices attached - no improvement.
The new HDD that I added is using the latest firmware from Seagate.
Right now I have reflashed the BIOS F8c and:
- the PSU fan still never stops
- windows Sleep acts like shutdown - whenever I want to wake the PC from Sleep i get a new boot, going through BIOS post screen and windows loading
Is there any other option that I have before testing a replacement PSU or mobo?
Thank you in advance for your responses.
