My system is built around a Core i9-7940x and an x299 Designare EX MB. I'd been having trouble with fan alarms going off and while poking around in BIOS, noticed this very strange fan curve for one of the system fans:

I can set the curve to manual and make it look correct, but whenever I reset to curves to optimized defaults, either in BIOS or in the Gigabyte Windows app, it goes back to this weird setting.

Can anyone tell me what's going on here? it makes me wonder if my fans might not be set up right with the right headers on the MB.

By looking at your manual, I am presuming that the fan plugged into header #2 is a fan you installed and not a fan that is installed by Gigabyte into the motherboard. Based on that presumption:

1. That fan is currently keyed to the temperature of the VRM sensor, as shown on the second line of BIOS option, "Fan Control Use Temperature Input." Is that fan pointed at the VRM, which is the red dot at the top of the mobo shown in SIV? I doubt it.

According to the default setting, the VRM on your mobo only needs to be cooled when the temperature hits 89 degrees. Then the fan will zoom to 70% of max. That tells me Gigabyte believes there is no reason to specifically cool the VRM on your system. That's great!

2. Select a different temp sensor keyed to what you want that fan to do. Example: you could select the CPU temp sensor as your temp control and use the default profile for CPU or create a manual profile of your choosing. It all depends on fan locations in your case.

3. It's your case and system, and I believe that you should decide what you want your cooling and circulation system to do and set your fans accordingly. Then save the fan profiles to a BIOS profile.

4. FWIW, I have a different Designare, but it works the same. I was surprised when I discovered there is a fan built into the mobo that by default doesn't turn on until 49 degrees. But when it turns on, it starts at 50% of max speed, and it is loud. I changed the fan curve temp to begin at 51 degrees and it has never come on since then. Everything is nice and quiet.

Thanks for the reply. This rig was built for me by a colleague so I guess I need to open it up and see what exactly he has connected to that header. Good to know that this might actually be a normal curve for something like VRM.

That is the small fan built into the Rear I/O that helps keep the vrm cool. Much like the chipset cooler on the x570 boards the only options for it are limited to a few pre-defined fan curves. If you set it to a manual curve you might be able to do a custom curve since its plugged into the fan header on the top left and not something hidden under the I/O shield. If its like the x570 chipset fan you will be hard limited to a few predefined curves.

Fixed by a Win reinstall to UEFI. Old install was non-UEFI and I guess this was causing the problem. Still since F11 was working this proves there might be an issue with no-UEFI installs on F20 and F30.
