Hello Forum Members,
I have started the process of searching for and researching a new Ryzen motherboard for my next build. I am a huge fan of Gigabyte motherboards and never really considered another make. However, I am bothered by the information I am collecting as I go. After reading reviews, viewing YT videos and trolling forums, the conclusion I have come to is that the current state of things with AM4 motherboards is poor. Have I missed the mark here? I do realize that many people wouldn't post a question/problem unless they were having a problem and that the reverse is probably true -- if a person isn't having a problem, they aren't likely to post about it. What I'm hoping to determine is if these problems I'm reading about are simply one-offs and the majority of the boards going out are ok or if it's the other way around, and most (all?) of the boards are problematic.
Ultimately, this may help me make a decision as to which board to buy and when. I am looking at the K5 and K7 very closely (leaning toward the K5 as it fits my needs more closely). I am not particularly interested in tweaking or overclocking...my emphasis will be on being stable with as little work as possible and long-term reliability.

Overclocking on the k5 is problematic, but if I leave the CPU at default clocks and just set the memory to a sane value I haven't had any issues.
The only problem you're likely to come up against is memory compatibility, particularly on boards like the K5 which haven't had much in the way of bios updates yet. I lucked out: with the F1 bios I could reach 2400 CL14, with F2 2933 CL15, on a kit rated for 2800 CL16. Other kits have trouble even booting, and it seems to vary from one board to the next (though I could be imagining things).
Other mainboard producers have experience similar issues with the AM4 platform, as Gigabyte does. Computer technology is pretty complex and it's elements have to cooperate with many different parts of various vendors. Creating a brand new IT platform is not like building a chair, which easily fits into everyone's house.
But people expect things to work like this by expecting the perfect symbiosis of mainboard, chipset and CPU right out of the box. Maybe AMD would have done better, if they took some more time for quality assurance.
From my point of view, all known problems are exaggerated. First, you cannot just blame Gigabyte for the current issues. I am pretty sure they work hard on reliable solutions, just as AMD does. Things just need some further time.
My rig (Gigabyte AB350-Gaming-3 with Ryzen 7 1700X @ 3.8 GHz) works pretty fine and relyable in the meantime. I am not concerned because my RAM works at 2933 MHz (instead of 3200 MHz). Games and applications run stable and stutter-free, that's all what matters. Higher clock speeds would improve frame rates a bit. Maybe benchmarks would see a difference, but my eyes don't.

For me, it's going awesome, but I'm also reading this board/forum for any problems I have as well as other people and their issues.
I'm running a gentle overclock at the moment. I am, as of the present, not devoting the time into pushing my RAM beyond 3000MHz (its rating) and measuring board temperatures. The Gaming 7 comes with 2 thermistor cables, which I guess is mighty cool. I use HWInfo as a tool. The AGESA code on the AM4 platform or whatever it is on the BIOS end is having problems for many, many companies out there right now.
I'm not impressed by the RGB issues that I'm reading from other people's experiences (relating to Gigabyte or whomever as opposed to the user). I assume with most issues pertaining to BIOS resetting or anything seemingly fixable that it's usually not the the user using a BIOS/CMOS battery that is 10 years old. (lol) Thank god we arent' talking peripherals such as a $50 markup on an RGB keyboard vs the non-RGB one.
Love the Killer Lan, love the dual audio codecs along with some support for Creative Labs. First had Creative Labs back in Police Quest 3 and Space Quest 4/5 days!
^ link that was provided by someone else in another thread. Especially if you're curious to all that consumer BS about overengineering vs underengineering. (It's an assymetric relationship between the 2 words IMO which means the statement is often proportionally invalid.) That does not include factors like environmental degradation/destruction of the environment though.
All I have left to do in the future is run dedicated watercooling from Koolance or EK Water or someone like that and find a much more quiet GFX card. aka watercool it but need a custom cooler block type of GFX card)
My main focus with this board will actually be RAM and how it all ends after a year/2years/3years vis-à-vis overclocking (the whole shebang relating to CPU first then RAM).
In any case, you save money vs some of the high end Intel stuff and since they are showing $1500-2000 Ryzen systems that smoke $5600 Apple systems for things that Apple are traditionally strong at, it's showing AMD's attempt to carve out a pocket in the industry at the moment.
Cheers, GMNat

I have the K5 and can tell you, if you have any interest in using fast RAM or overclocking your CPU, don't bother with it. It sounds like you really don't, so it may be an OK solution for you; however, I'd still recommend looking elsewhere.
To be fair to the K5, it has only had a couple of BIOS revisions and it will likely get better (particularly the compatibility with faster RAM), and you CAN overclock the CPU OK. However, contrary to their very own overclocking guide which is linked on the K5 page, you do NOT have the ability to directly set voltages such as Vcore - you have to use offsets instead and I find it very troubling that Gigabyte did this.
I used to be a Gigabyte fan but this whole episode has completely turned me off. I see many complaints about other Ryzen boards too so maybe the platform was released early. However, if I could easily get a refund on my K5 board, I probably would take the rebate and then look into Asrock's Taichi model.

Yeah, sounds messed ColtsFan.... I'm surprised for all the vouching for ASRock apart from Asus or MSI. I did check some review scores for the Taichi though lol.
I'll chuck that link up so you can view some more indepth information before you pull the trigger on something. As always, guy could be biased or work for the illuminati or something clever like that.
I'm guessing it's a little of column A vs column B... if you read various issues across the board.

Thanks for the comments. It's good to know at least some people are having a good experience out of the box and good to know that if I get one, I stand at least a chance of not having any problems. I still intend to wait a while, probably several more weeks before I actually get anything. I agree with the statement that this stuff is tremendously complex (I'm surprised it works well as often as it does). I have also looked at the Taichi and the Prime X370 Pro and both seem like they are solid choices, though are suffering from many of the same problems as any other AM4 board. I guess I am just waiting for a hero to rise (the Asus pun notwithstanding) and I realize that will take time.

My mobo (AB350-Gaming 3) three times got soft bricked and this is F... annoying. If next bios update did not fix this propably I will buy something from Asus (X370-F Gaming, X370-Pro or VI Hero)
And again soft brick when I tried to start the PC....

Like you, I have been a fan of the Gigabyte motherboards. I love the feature set they offer and find them VERY difficult to beat at the mid-tier offerings.
I purchased the AB350 Gaming 3 with great expectation, but my experience has been poor. First board was DOA, but I suspect I was sent an RMA. The second board worked, but the front USB 3.0 header failed after a few weeks. Now on my 3rd board and finally got the RAM to run at 2666. The first set of RAM I purchased was REMOVED from the QVL before I got a working version of the board, so I had to sell those and ... Well you get the picture.
My advice: If you want a Ryzen system (I highly recommend it), wait for the next revision of motherboards. Rev. 2.0 should be a much smoother experience. Pay attention to the QVL list for your chosen board that Gigabyte has on their web site and get RAM that is verified to run at the speed you desire. Keep in mind that you may NOT get those speeds if you populate all 4 DDR4 slots.
Ryzen has a LOT of potential beyond what you're seeing now, and the architecture is more future proof than the equivalently priced Intel offering. There are some bugs to be worked out for sure, but I was expecting a little less of a battle than what I've seen so far....
My Signature... AB350 Gaming 3 - Three of them. First two are broken. AMD Ryzen 7 1700x @ 3.5 Gskill TridentZ @ 3200Mhz-CL 14-14-14-34. Only 2 of 4 sticks.

First things first... we were WARNED that this was a new platform, teething problems, bla bla bla, therefore a tough launch was expected. No complaining on that part. If you can't afford downtime or just don't want to go through the hassle, it's easy: Go KabyLake.
My board is the AB350M-G3, and my experience has been quite smooth actually. My only problems: - High latency on Thread 0 (ISR count on ACPI.SYS). Fixed by uninstalling all Gigabyte Software and disabeling power off on USB and HDD in the power plan. Which one was the culprit I have no idea, but I would guess on the USB. No reinstalling the soft anyway because its a mess. - Audio panel false notifications. Fixed by disabeling notifications, but would prefer not to have to. - Image denied in bios. Not fixed but not that annoying, just ESC-Enter to continue boot to win. - HPET was messing up media playing in Virtualbox. Fixed switching to hyper-v.
My 2800 rated Hynix DDR4 is up to 2933 so no complaining there either. Anyway I don't CPU overclock, and probably will try underclocking/volting during summer.

Interesting point on the USB hawgietonight.
A million ppl or so have have the image update denied/bios image error. Lots of forum threads for this.
I had it one of my dual bios(es) (Gaming 7), and it went away after manually OCing my RAM instead of using XMP. I however also used the other BIOS for a week or two, before I gave <Gaming 7 newest BIOS> another shot.
So for single BIOS mobos, I would guess best solution would be reflash latest bios and dont' ever enable XMP until the issue is resolved on AMD or American Megatrends end of things through an update.
I wouldn't tell you to flash your BIOS today or 50 years from now if you didn't want too though.
This will allow you to circumvent 99% of memory problems. I'm running mine at 3333 MHz 14-14-14-32-1T @ 1.5v (perfectly safe for these chips).
I have the Gaming K7, the highest-end AM4 board from Gigabyte and a 1700 running at 3.9 GHz. These are my main annoyances:
* Even after setting the PCI-e mode to Gen2, I can't go past something like 104 MHz on the BLCK. The external BLCK generator this board carries was the only reason I bought it over a cheaper B350 or even X370 board, so this is a bit of a disappointment. It could be the video card's fault (I have a GTX 980), but most people seem to be able to go at least a bit higher, so I kind of doubt it. * There's a bug I just found out where the Vcore under load goes way down after the computer gets back from sleep (see my post about it here). This causes instability every time the computer comes back from sleep, making a fresh reboot necessary. My guess is it's related to the load line calibration (LLC) setting being somehow ignored because of the board not properly getting back from sleep state, so Vdroop is not being properly compensated for. * I have to use an unusually high voltage (something between 1.41-1.425v, with Extreme LLC) to reliably overclock my 1700 to 3.9 GHz. This could be a luck-of-the-draw, silicon lottery thing, but even then it still looks unusually high: so there's also the possibility of a voltage regulation issue. I may one day test this CPU in another AM4 board just to know for sure. * Soft-brick bug: one sunny day you'll find your computer apparently dead, with the board's lights completely off and no amount of power cycling making it come back to life. Then you'll have to remove the CMOS battery to work around it. Several people RMA'd their boards (not only K7s, it seems to affect the whole lineup) because of this, and it's clearly a Gigabyte-specific issue that still hasn't been fixed. They have acknowledged it explicitly though. * Another Gigabyte-specific issue: crackling and distortion coming from the front panel audio connection (no problem with the back one). Seems kind of pointless to have two audio chips as a selling point if one, arguably the most important one, doesn't work properly. This is not a case issue: I'm using the same case I used with AM3+, and my previous mobo didn't have this. From my understanding there's still no clear acknowledgment from Gigabyte regarding this issue, be it as a priority or even as a widespread issue with either their hardware or software.
