Clean install of Windows 10 15063 Pro x64. Thunderbolt port is initially configured as an Intel eXtensible USB 3.1 Host Controller with Microsoft drivers. I then downloaded and installed the Thunderbolt 3 software then plugged in my external Thunderbolt 3 external storage drive using a CableMatters certified Thunderbolt 3 cable and nothing. The drive configured itself as UASP and the USB stayed as is.
Any ideas on how to get this to work?
thanks

Power off your PC. Cable up the storage drive to the port on the back marked USB-C. Now boot into the BIOS and go to Peripherals ---> Thunderbolt and make sure that the port is enabled. You should be using all of the set defaults for Thunderbolt. Now boot up your PC, go to Device Manager and look under Storage Controllers. What devices are listed?
Does the device work when you try to access as a storage device? You should be able to see the device listed under Disk Drives in Device Manager or under Disk Management. If you see the device listed in Disk Management, be sure that it is marked on-line and that it is initialized.

Hi and thanks..
Have done all of that. Thunderbolt is enabled in BIOS and the USB drive is detected in Disk Management but the drive is consistently configured as UASP Storage Conroller. I've even gone the route of starting a firmware update which triggers the TBT3 port to activate and show that there is 1 controller and 2 ports. When I reset the USB external drive and plug it in, it reverts to the UASP driver. Have even set the Override 1st device in chain requirement with no luck.
I have tried the cable the manufacturer supplied as well as a TBT3 certified cable. Same result. I would be fine trying to manually update the UASP driver but don't know which .inf that would be.
Do I have to use a dock as the middleman to get this thing to work? Has anyone successfully installed anything on this board? I'm wondering if there isn't a firmware update required. Right now the JHL6540 TBT3 controller is NVM 9.

It discusses primarily video capabilities and mentions connecting USB devices as well. You can also daisy chain TBT3 devices from it. Is there a solution in that paragraph I'm missing?

Seems like you are saying this TBT3 port won't do anything but video?
If that's the case then I have definitely been misled and it's not working as advertised.
www.hardwaresecrets.com/aorus-gigabyte-z270x-gaming-7-motherboard/4/ The Intel Z270 chipset supports 14 USB 2.0 ports and ten USB 3.0 ports. The Gigabyte Z270X-Gaming 7 offers four USB 2.0 ports, available through two headers located on the motherboard. There are nine USB 3.0 ports, five on the rear panel and four available through two headers. There are also two USB 3.1 ports, one Type A and one Type C, controlled by an Intel JHL6540.
The USB 3.1 type C port is also compatible with Thunderbolt 3 connections and DisplayPort monitors that use this connector.

The port is a dual purpose Thunderbolt 3 and USB3 USAP port. The manual to me reads TB3 for video and USB 3 for storage.
Lots of storage devices will plug into a TB3 port. Most of the specifications for TB storage devices all seem to indicate USB3 gen 2 speeds.
I have tried some TB converters and the device always connects USB3 gen 2 and never native TB.
The manual is not very specific that the TB port on the GA-Z270x Gaming 7 will in fact support a TB3 native connection for storage devices more or less support full TB3 speeds for storage devices.

The speculation that the Aorus Thunderbolt port is intended to support only video is unfounded. It is clearly advertised as a Thunderbolt 3 port. Even the line referenced to support that speculation doesn't actually support it. It says "and", not "or":
The USB 3.1 type C port is also compatible with Thunderbolt 3 connections and DisplayPort monitors that use this connector.
Anyway, this should work at max speed with devices like the Samsung X5 Portable SSD if there are no bugs in the devices or software involved. The X5 didn't exist when the board was made, so could not have been tested. But according to design and advertising, it should work.
Have you tried speed testing it? It might be appearing as USB, but operating as Thunderbolt.

Even if I upgrade, I wouldn't buy a Gigabyte board. Me and all my close friends will never buy Gig again.
